2021 - Present
A Work by the Center for the Study of the Force Majeure
Conceptualized and Inspired by Late Founder and Eco-Art Pioneer, Emeritus Professor Newton Harrison NEWTON HARRISON (1932-2022) @ UCSD & UCSC
A Design collaboration with Dr. JoAnn Kuchera-Morin and the AlloSphere Research Group.
This was a special salon on Exhibition Evaluation for Diverse Communities as many in our community are mourning the recent passing of Newton Harrison. There are two PST projects directly related to the work of the Harrisons and many more that have been influenced by Newton and Helen’s decades of making work blending art and marine biology, agriculture, urban planning and activism and that tackled, early on, the effects of climate change.
Our provocateur was JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, Director, Allosphere Research Laboratory. Dr. Kuchera-Morin will share work about the Allosphere as well as the current contributions to the project Sensorium - an installation that will be in honor of Newton’s work and vision of the life web and the world ocean.
DASER is a discussion forum on art and science projects in the national capital region hosted by Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences and co-organized by Leonardo: the International Society for Art Science and Technology. DASER strives to provide the public with a snapshot of the cultural environment of the region and to foster community and discussion around the intersection of disciplines
